Understanding the Occupational English Test (OET) examination

So you want to relocate to the United Kingdom and work in the NHS? You will need to register with the NMC to obtain your PIN to be able to practice in the UK. In order to obtain your PIN, the NMC need to be satisfied you have the necessary knowledge of English to communicate effectively. Communication is defined as speaking, reading, listening and writing and your evidence must demonstrate competence in these four mandatory skills.

The NMC will accept an Occupational English Test (OET) certificate that confirms you have achieved at least a B grade in the writing, reading, listening and speaking sections. NMC will only accept results from OET tests taken from February 2016 onwards.

 

Assessment Structure (Including changes from 9th September 2018)

Part 1: Listening Test (Approx. 40-45 minutes)

  • Same content for all healthcare professions
  • Part A: 15 minutes: Two separate consultations between healthcare professional and patient
  • Part B: 10 minutes: Six short dialogues or monologues in work place settings
  • Part C: 15 minutes: Two long presentations or interviews with health professionals

Part 2: Reading Test (Approx. 60 minutes)

  • Same content for all healthcare professions
  • Contacts tasks such as matching and short-answer questions, broader range of documents such as policy and procedure documents
  • Part A: 15 minutes: Fast reading task
  • Part B: 45 minutes: Six short work place extracts
  • Part C: Included within Part B: Two long presentation passages

Part 3: Writing Test (Approx. 45 minutes)

This test is specific to the profession based on typical workplace situations. e.g. a letter of transfer or discharge, or a letter to advise or inform a patient, carer, or group. There are no changes to this section.

Part 4: Speaking Test (Approx. 20 minutes)

This test is specific to the profession based on typical workplace situations. In a private room you will take part in two role-plays. You take your professional role (as a healthcare professional) while the interlocutor plays a patient or client, or sometimes a relative/carer.

The global cost for OET tests are AUD 587. The OET will cost EU applicants around EUR 369* depending on currency fluctuations.
